How to Stop Worrying and Love the Crate

A hollowed out femur bone (a grisly item, for sale at prices that hardly seem worth it, but are) that is crammed full of peanutbutter takes one's mind off imprisionment. Ten minutes later it like, "Oh, was I upset? Why was that? Where is everyone? Who cares. I'm full. I think I'll take a nap." Your dog is a peanutbutter-leukocyte. Set him to his important work, and watch him run for the crate when he smells an open jar of Jif.

One Less Palm Springs Modern

A Richard Neutra house was just unceremoniously destroyed by a Minnesotan. [NYT Story]

The Cubs: Who Cares?

Saturday, I took an all day intro class in fly fishing. It tied together a lot of things I had picked up from various web, tv, book, and magazine sources and I acquired a lot of new info. Using this knowledge, I caught my first fish on the fly this weekend.

In re: Base ball: Litigation King Peter Angelos, even though he just scored a $150 million share of the Maryland tobacco settlement, is apparently trying to destroy the Orioles to prevent the establishment of a DC-based baseball team. [more]

Correlation or Causation?

Groundbreaking research of great import to Cranky Ranch denizens:

"A university professor has found on average the more people drink, the more they earn. Professor Chris Auld says his research confirms the so-called alcohol-income puzzle. His research shows people found to drink more than average are also more likely to be successful and earn more... The findings should not be construed as an excuse to drink your way up the ladder, adds Prof Auld."

Living, Learning, Loving

I have often been up nights, wishing I had some way to pass on the lessons of Crit/Self-Crit to the next generation. How will the children learn to hold a room of people hostage to emotional blackmail... To backstab with impunity.. To turn passive-aggression into performance art... To perform Maoist rituals of expiation?

What will happen to the children?

Well, thank God, someone has answered my cry. (via Opinion Journal)

From the Seattle Times:

Sitting in small circles, their knees touching, students shared their own hurt and the pain they had inflicted on others.
The tears flowed. In some groups, half the Washington Middle School students were crying at once.

Applause followed, as the seventh- and eighth-graders stepped up to roving microphones and declared what they would do to mend broken relationships with their schoolmates.

Two boys shook hands after one apologized for making fun of the other, and said he hoped to be more supportive.

A girl owned up to snubbing an old friend. "I'm sorry that I've been very distant and that I've chosen other friends in school," she said. "I'm going to work on that, and I'm going to be a better friend."

The girls embraced.

Challenge Day, a workshop aimed at creating a safe school environment free of teasing and harassment, has come to Seattle public schools.

More

I think every day should be Challenge Day. Especially at the Cranky Ranch.
